Within Milwaukee County is the 597-acre Menomonee River Parkway, and this parkway contains two sections chosen as an Area of Concern project – Sections 5 and 6. Section 5 ranges (north to south) from W. Hampton Ave. to W. Capitol Drive. Section 6 has a western boundary of N. Mayfair Rd. and a southern boundary of W. Burleigh St. Together these make up 178 +/- acres of habitat to be restored.
Both Section 5 and 6 have the opportunity to provide unique habitat for a variety of native wildlife, such as fish, birds and frogs. Preservation and enhancement of this project area is important for increasing fish and wildlife populations along the Menomonee River in an urban habitat.
Menomonee River Parkway Sections 5 and 6 were chosen as an Area of Concern project specifically to address the population loss of wildlife species in the AOC. Given that the Menomonee River travels through both sections 5 and 6, this provides unique habitat and security for many wildlife species living in these urban areas. Wetlands, ephemeral ponds, and riparian habitats are unique in urban greenspaces, but they provide a variety of benefits to all different types of wildlife.
